To us Modern Australian means mixing European kitchen technique, mediterranean hospitality, with the types of bold flavours you might expect from Pan-Asian cuisine, all served it in a typically casual aussie, family-dining setting.
We are located in a heritage townhouse just off Taylor Square at the axis of Paddington, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. The restaurant features comfortable counter-top dining, a garden terrace and an intimate dining room, also available for private hire.
Our popular boozy brunch runs every Saturday & Sunday morning, with last seatings at 3pm. Every week for one day, we focus entirely on local produce in vegetarian and vegan dishes on our Meat Free Monday.
About Us
We are 3 mates who have all spent most of our working lives working in hospitality all around the globe but have been particularly influenced by restaurant & bars in Melbourne and London.
This is our second venue following multi-award winning cocktail bar Bulletin Place which opened in 2012. Now, just over 6 years later, this hard to find, “shoe-box sized” 45-seater room is one of Australia’s most awarded-ever bars and recognised globally for the quality of drinks, friendly team and casual vibe.
At Dead Ringer we aim to combine most of all our love of food with world class cocktails in addition to a focus towards fortified wines and vermouths. Our noteworthy, sharp wine list exclusively features Australian bottles focusing on many smaller producers. Finally we write our menu and select different wines every day so there should always be something new to try.

The Kitchen
We are thrilled to have one of Australia’s most experienced chefs, Jamie Irving (previously Berta, Est, Pearl) heading up our kitchen. Together our goal is to champion the exceptional ingredients of this great continent through a changeable menu of large & small sharing plates.
Our kitchen stays open throughout the day and late into every evening, and has become a locals favourite restaurant in Surry Hills.
